2-Day Capacity Building Workshop on SDG-2.1

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has mandate to build a world without hunger through technical cooperation and assistance. This mandate is pursued through three main objectives namely:   i) eliminating hunger, building a world where everyone has access to safe, nutritious food; ii) fighting poverty, particularly in rural communities; and iii) Caring for the Earth by ensuring that global and national food and agriculture systems are environmentally sustainable.

In line with the above mandate, FAO is very active in the implementation of the SDGs and is a Custodian United Nations Agency for 21 SDG indicators which is testimony to her strong competences in monitoring and to the centrality of food and agriculture to the whole 2030 Agenda. As custodian agency, FAO is in positionto,amongst others:

  • Engage all actors concerned in national policy processes and dialogues, contribute to innovative partnerships;

  • Support national statistical institutions to produce global and national indicators;

  • Support governments to report on challenges and results; and

  • Contribute to the global follow-up and review of SDGs.

The objective of the workshop is to present the SDG2 Monitoring indicators namely: 2.1.1 (Prevalence of Undernourishment-PoU); and 2.1.2 (Food Insecurity Experience Scale-FIES) for which FAO is custodian and promote the inclusion of the PoU and FIES survey tools in national surveys for monitoring SDG target 2.1 and for evaluating projects directed at reducing food insecurity. The workshop will also provide the opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of the participants on SDG-2 indicators and monitoring process as well as build capacity of the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to act as independent monitors of SDGs’ implementation.

Participants will include key stakeholders from the medical profession, Civil Society Organizations, government officials, traditional and religious leaders and the academia, etc.
